Important Update: Protecting Your Dental Health and Your Insurance Coverage

At Logos Dentistry, our primary responsibility is—and always will be—your health and the longevity of your smile. We’re sharing an insurance update that may affect how diagnostic dental X-rays are covered for some plans.

Last updated: March 2, 2026

The situation

On February 19, 2026, our practice received an email notification from Principal Insurance Company regarding a change to their periapical X-ray coverage. Principal indicated that routine preventive visits may require additional documentation to justify why X-rays are taken, or payment may be delayed or denied.

We have already received a payment denial (pending submission of narrative and proof of need) for services rendered on February 11, 2026 for a patient with Principal dental coverage.

Our position on your health

Diagnostic X-rays are a vital tool used to detect issues that are not visible during a visual exam—such as infections, bone loss, and decay between teeth—before they become painful and costly emergencies.

Dr. Burke and I will not lower the standard of care to align with insurance regulations that undermine oral health. Diagnostic decisions should be made by your dentist based on your unique clinical needs—not by an insurance company’s bottom line.

What this means for you

  • Clinical integrity: We will continue to recommend X-rays based on the highest clinical standards.
  • Potential coverage shifts: Principal (or other providers) may deny claims for essential X-rays, which could result in a patient balance depending on your plan.
  • Our support: We will provide documentation to support claims and advocate for coverage when appropriate.

Because insurance policies are contracts between the insurer and the employer, you often have the most influence in ensuring your coverage remains comprehensive. The email template below can help you voice your concerns.

Questions or concerns?

We value the trust you place in us. Our goal is to catch small issues before they become painful, expensive problems. If you have any questions about this change or how it may affect your next visit, please call our office.

Sincerely,
Dr. Putrasahan & Dr. Burke
